My doctor wants me to have Physical Therapy. What is Postural Restoration, and how is it different from Physical Therapy?
Postural Restoration (PRI) is a unique approach to physical medicine. Based on assessing and examining underlying biomechanics, the treatment program utilizes techniques that restore proper alignment of the body while implementing proper breathing. PRI addresses the body as a whole, with movement or stagnation in each area affecting how the body will succeed in function. In traditional therapies, the body is often treated in parts. Knee pain is treated at the knee, for instance. However, the underlying problem could be rooted elsewhere, and improper body mechanics can cause pain elsewhere, as in the knee. This principle can be applied to any area of the body.
In the case of an identifiable injury or surgery, the resulting improper movements from these events can lead to compensations. PRI addresses those compensation patterns before a new pattern, with its accompanying pain, can develop.
How long will it take me to get well?
Simple cases may resolve in just a few visits, where other, more complex cases, could take months. In either case, compliance of the patient to the home program and supporting the new muscular balance with a conditioning exercise program will aid in progress and ongoing stability. There are also PRI Positional Guidelines which, when implemented, will accelerate your progress.
How often do I need to do my home program? How long does it take?
Your home program should be done a minimum of once per day. For maximum results, repeating the exercises several times will reinforce proper movements and facilitate improvement. Your program should take about 15 minutes to perform.
How often do I need to see the therapist?
In most cases, it will be one to four times per month, based on compliance to home program. Follow-up appointments are for the purpose of assessing progress and to advance or adjust the home program to current level in the restoration process.
When I finish my rehab program, will there be recommendations to help me stay well?
Absolutely! We at Krull Clinic want to help you remain pain free and functional. Proper nutrition, exercise, and stress management are all part of remaining well. We will be happy to discuss your future wellness with you!
